My sweet nephew just celebrated his birthday. His mom threw a party with a construction and truck theme, and I was happy to contribute a few crafts to make his special event more memorable!
My sister-in-law is super generous, so I really wanted to create a goodie bag for her, that would A.) FIT all of the treats she was sending home with the party guests B.) incorporate the party theme and C.) look like more than just a plane ol' bag; and then the traffic cone idea hit me. (In fact, I may have been in traffic STARING at a row of cones when this "brilliance" struck. But lets keep that between us, shall we?)
Before I bought or cut any fabric, I pulled out my giant roll o' butcher paper to make a paper pattern. Then, after some folding, pinning, eye-balling and snipping...I had the basics shape created in bright orange felt! My cone was nearly life-sized and I was thrilled with that!
I did a bit more pinning and then got the trusty old sewing machine out. Here are a few stills from the process:
After creating the first one, I whipped up four more, and added felt handles for easy carrying.
Incidentally, I'm thinking about putting my pattern for sale in my etsy shop- so I'd love to hear from parents on whether you think this is purchase-worthy. My thought was that the kids could take their cones home and use them in their rooms to store their small cars and trucks in, or have mom stuff them with Polyfill, and use them as pillows! Successful?
Anyway, beyond my cone contribution, there was a TON of truck party fun!
My sister-in-law made this super adorable cake that was DEEELISH! It even had edible rocks on it! Great job, sis!
The kiddos had a blast playing with little trucks in the wheel barrow of sand!
MOST of the boys were really good at pinning the scoop EXACTLY where it belonged!
Poor little guy!
I also made these construction-themed bean bags for a game of "truck tire bulls eye." The boys were insanely good at this by the way. It was almost scary!
(I love a party with activities, don't you?)
After lots of crafts, cake and fun, the boys all packed up and left with their cones stuffed with goodies!
Most important, my nephew had an amazing day! He was surrounded by friends and loved ones and his mother put on an awesome party for him! I was honored to join in the fun.
